class ab vs class d sound quality

Class AB amplifiers may introduce some crossover distortion but they get closer to the ideal of Class A for most of its operating regime. By doing so class AB amplifiers can keep a higher level of audio fidelity closer to class A amplifiers while staying cooler and more efficient like a class B.

So I feel Class AB still seems to make the most sense.

After a few weeks of use I can say that the sound quality of the D3 amps sound the same as my previous AB class receivers did. Just recently installed a new Onkyo receiver with class D3 amps. Class AB design offers power efficiency and good sound. Coming full circle because a Class-D amplifier is more efficient than the conventional Class-AB one it can be lighter.

That said if youre really serious about SQ then youd get a Class A amp which has no crossover distortion Class AB and no switching noise Class D. Also true is that circuit design materials workmanship price point are more important to sound qualityfidelity than Class or circuit topology. In Class AB you have actual audio coming through the entire amp where in D its converted to a PWM signal at some point.

A Class D power supply is fine though. In short it is making a larger identical signal. Given the common bias against Class D in 2-channel audio it would be interesting to see some comparisons between similarly priced Class AB and Class D power amps.

Class D design has the highest. My first thought is that a class D would have less audible harmonics. I have no problem at all with G or H because those are just Class AB with multiple rails.

Class BAB is therefore a pretty good compromise. It depends greatly on amplifiers used. Class AB makes the input signal and output signal identical and every step of the way.

Even so the efficiency of a practical Class-D amplifier can be better than 90 percent which is significantly better than a Class-AB design 785 percent at best and typically closer to 50 percent. Modern class D amps are every bit as good as class AB per the measurements and are better in many regards efficiency weight etc. Class AB design offers power efficiency and good sound.
